Problem Discovery

Beginners aren’t supported enough in their learning to stay motivated.

Learning music is supposed to be joyful — but for beginners, it’s often the opposite. They're excited to start, but get lost without a clear path, stuck in confusion, and discouraged by lack of progress. Even with tons of tutorials out there, something's missing — structure, clarity, and a sense of direction.

Through desktop research and an internet search, we identified 4 major problems musicians face while learning music:

HMW support beginners in music so they don’t give up before progress becomes rewarding?

The Process

Researching Problem Space

Initial research into the evolving space of AI and wearable technology in music revealed a growing demand for more intuitive, responsive, and accessible tools — especially among solo musicians.

While tools like AIVA and Amadeus Code support composition, and wearables like Genki Wave and MO-Band™ enable gesture-based control, none offer a unified experience.
These findings suggested a clear opportunity to create something beyond utility — a supportive and adaptive learning companion that empowers musicians through practice, performance, and play.

Analysing Market & Competitions

Competitive analysis highlighted a fragmented ecosystem of products, each addressing isolated aspects of the music-making process — learning, performance, collaboration, or control.

Most solutions focus on niche features, often requiring users to jump between tools.
Chordex positions itself differently. By integrating AI improvisation, guided learning, gesture control, and MIDI sync into a single platform, we address the whole journey — from building foundational skills to performing live with confidence.

Defining Persona

Harmonia
College student & beginner guitar player
Pain Points
  • Lack of Structured Learning

  • Difficulty with Music Theory

  • Limited Improvisation Skills

  • Stage Fright & Performance Anxiety

  • Overwhelmed by Music Production Tools

  • Need for Instant Feedback

Goals
  • Master Basic Music Theory

  • Improve Playing Skills

  • Enhance Improvisation Ability

  • Compose Original Music

  • Build Performance Confidence

  • Integrate with Music Production Tools

User Storyboarding

Placing the persona in an ideal context scenario helps identify the minimum required functions of our MVP.

At this stage, our primary goal is to extract a list of design requirements that we have to support in order for these ideal scenarios to happen. These requirements would then lead our idea generation phase.

Approaching a Solution

Empowering musical growth through AI-powered improvisation, hands-free control, and adaptive guidance

Leveraging our research insights and understanding of solo musicians' needs, we recognized that the ideal solution must offer not just tools, but meaningful interaction — connecting users to their creative decisions and musical growth in real time.

This led us to an approach centered on AI-powered improvisation, adaptive feedback, and gesture-based control — helping users stay present, explore freely, and build confidence through small, consistent moments of progress. Chordex turns practice into a responsive, motivating experience where musicians can feel, hear, and shape their own development.
